The Race for Global Food Security

The world faces an escalating food security crisis, with over 700 million people considered hungry and food insecure
In the worst hit regions of the Global South, falling international aid budgets and continuing debt burdens have constrained governments’ ability to respond. In these circumstances, both the private sector and private finance have an increasingly important role to play, contributing know-how, technology and investment, and working in tandem with public sector institutions to build long-term resilience of local food system and co-create solutions to the crisis.
The number of private sector initiatives to address global food insecurity have been growing, however perceptions that investments are fractional and fragmented, or a lack of awareness among private sector companies regarding how to contribute effectively has constrained participation. Governments can address such concerns by creating business environments conducive to investment. Multistakeholder partnerships, combining the strength of the public and private sectors, can multiply impact, aligning global resources with local needs to address challenges effectively.
Hosted in New York during New York Climate Week, this event will explore how the private sector, philanthropic and multistakeholder partnerships can drive innovation towards long-term solutions to the challenge of global food security. With finance and investment fundamental to success, speakers will also address how climate and other innovative sources of finance, catalysed with government support, can be mobilised to transform global food systems at scale.
